Great resourceFrom Planeta Journal - This is the first comprehensive collection to the region's small inns which offer lodging in the "Bed and Breakfast" tradition. Brilliantly executed, the book showcases accommodations in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua which offer something distinctly different from traditional hotels. While Central America may not be home to a thriving "B&B Culture," it does have quite a few unique inns. Author Shimke describes the best, providing information on amenities, services, location and the time it took to receive a response via email! Black and white photos compliment the text. Highly recommended!

The Other Side of Paradise: Tourism, Conservation and Development in the Bay Islands
Published in Hardcover by Cognizant Communication Corp (January, 2001)
Average review score:

Great StuffI really enjoyed this insightful masterpiece. I have visited the Bay Islands on numerous occasions over many years. I can honestly say that this book very accurately depicts the consequences of tourism on the people, communities, and environment. The book really opened my eyes to the fact that if development of the tourism industry continues at such a rapid pace, then in time the paradise that I enjoy so much may not turn out to be such a paradise after all. Thank you.
Excellent!- One of the best academic books of the year, The Other Side of Paradise reviews tourism, conservation and development in the Bay Islands. The author has focused on tourism and development for many years and this volume is a well-written synthesis of her findings. She explores the historical legacy of the Bay Islands and the expansion of the international tourism market. All is not well in Paradise as she documents the negative impacts on the communities and the local ecosystems. Maps, black and white photos and illustrations compliment the text.

Review of the El Cajon Archaeological Project ReportThis is an excellent book. It is the best project of an integrated approach to archaeology that I have seen to date. The extent of multidisciplinary researchers and the scope of the project are staggering. This volume sythesizes the data seamlessly. It is a must read for any professional or individual interested in anthropological and environmental archaeology, human ecology, environmental studies, Maya studies, etc. A really great report

Del Tiempo Y El Tropico-Honduras/of Time and the Tropics: Bilingual
Published in Hardcover by Koninklijk Instituut (03 October, 2002)
Average review score:

a visual-semantico-aural experienceThis book and CD combination wonderfully succeeds in evoking the northern coast of Honduras. The often unusual photos enjoy a very high quality reproduction. The music is fantastic, by the best singer-songwriter in Honduras, Guillermo Anderson. He covers the wide range of musical styles found in this multi-cultural region with little segues of non-musical local sounds between most tracks. The surprise for me was the prose by Julio Escoto, poetic short stories and descriptions, validating his position as one of the best contemporary authors in Central America. The book could use a bit of explanation about the photos and music for those not familiar with the rich culture of this area, but the project stands on its own as a sensual ethnography that captures a place and time more of the world should be aware of. And for a CD and hardcover book w/ full page high-quality color photography the price is quite a bargain.

Faith in Action: Medical Missionaries in Central America
Published in Paperback by White Rose Books (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Superb Glimpses into LifeThis is truely one of the most outstanding books that I have had the privilege of reading, enjoying and experiencing in my life. The words are beautiful and the pictures show even much more of the emotions that go into the helping of such needful people. If we all could do something like this, even in a small way that would help peoples in third world countries learn, eat, play, and participate in a better life, it would be good. Thank you...Kathy!

HONDURAS AND ITS BAY ISLANDS -- A Mariner's Guide
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Heron Island Media (02 November, 1998)
Average review score:

Essential reading for the Bay Islands sailorThe most comprehensive, accurate and thoughtful guide to the Bay Islands available to the cruising sailor. Well researched and well written. The charts, while accurate and plentiful, need work. I hope to see more areas covered by Capt. Rhodes in the future.

Wonderful mix of history and travel information. This book is full of wonderful facts and tidbits about Honduras. It contains information about the well known tourist spots such as Copan and the Bay Islands. But it also highlights lesser known out of the way tows such as La Esperanza (My hometown) and Gracias. I enjoyed it thoughrougly and refer to it often. As a bonus, It is full of historical facts from Pre-history , The Colonial and Republican eras and the not too distant past. I love it. Carlos Rosa Miami, FL
Terrific Book, very helpfulHonduras Handbook has been very helpful to me in my travel through Honduras. It is comprehensive, and especially strong in historical references. I look forward to the 2nd edition which should reflect the reality of tourism in Honduras after Mitch. However, most of the information continues to be accurate and helpful.
An invaluable sourceI found this guidebook invaluable on my Honduran journey. The book was for the most part, highly accurate, informed, and well written. It is clear that the author traveled extensively throughout Honduras and was able to learn about the culture and the people. I also found the historical references fascinating. They enhanced my trip. I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting Honduras.
